Drybrook took a long time to get going in this match against bottom of the table Oldfield who looked a lot better team than their league position suggests.
Drybrook enjoyed the monopoly of possession and territory in the first 20 minutes but a combination of handling errors and solid defence from Oldfield kept the teams locked at nil – nil.
Eventually Drybrook took a shot and goal with a penalty award and new outside half Tim Stevenson made no mistake with his kick.
This lifted Drybrook’s spirits and within a few minutes they scored their first try of the game. A delightful break from scrum half Mitch Baldwin caught Oldfield out and after several off loads, Stevenson took the final pass to crash over.
Stevenson converted his own try but Drybrook could not build on this score as errors began to creep in and Oldfield had more of the ball.
Right on the stroke of half time Oldfield moved the ball wide on half way but a well-read interception by Drybrook skipper Simon Rugman resulted in a simple try to give his team a commanding lead at the break.
Half Time:
Drybrook 15pts
Oldfield Old Boys nil
The penalty count against Drybrook began to mount in the second half and the visitors had several kicks at goal but could not get on the scoreboard.
Drybrook No 8 Lee Ward was yellow carded as frustration crept but despite the numerical disadvantage they were able to keep pressure on the visitors.
Flanker Danny Price made an incisive break to take play within metres of the Oldfield line and from the resulting ruck Baldwin nipped in for the try.
A kick to the corner soon followed and Baldwin grabbed his second try when he peeled off a driven maul to touch down in the corner.
Stevenson converted and following this, gaps began to appear as the visitor’s defence began to tire.
The next try came when some lovely handling resulted in centre Ben Large crossing near the posts and Stevenson duly added the extras.
Liam Jackson who has recently returned to the fold scored Drybrook’s last try when he broke free 30 metres out and showed a clean pair of heels to the Oldfield cover.
Late in the game the influential Stevenson was assisted from the field with a knee injury and this took the gloss off what was another comfortable bonus point victory for the home side.
Drybrook’s man of the match was scrum half Mitch Baldwin.
