The United XV opened up their league campaign with a solid bonus point victory over Gordon League at the Mannings.
Drybrook opened the scoring 8 minutes into the game, good forward pressure resulted in quick ball for the backs, inside centre Jack Whiting cutting a great line from Flyhalf Andy Milner to score with Milner converting.
This was shortly followed by another try from Drybrook. Awarded a 5-metre scrum after a Gordon League defender had carried the ball over his try line, the pack laid the solid foundations and Number 8 Mitch Renton was able to pick and go and barge his way through the defence. Once again Milner added the extras.
Drybrook continued to probe into Gordon
League territory, where by the visitor infringed, resulting in a penalty which was kicked to the corner.
The driving maul was set and Ben Steward forced his way over in the corner. The conversion was missed but Drybrook took a healthy 19-0 lead into the half time break.
The second half was contested as fiercely as the first half, but Drybrook were only able to add one more try to their account, another fine driving lineout resulting in Jordon “Gordy” Taylor getting over the whitewash, with Milner successful with the conversion.
Drybrook showed their tenacity in defence, the final few minutes of the game Gordon League were searching for their first score of the game
but were met by some resolute defending from the Drybrook lads.
This was a solid showing from the United XV, who will take great confidence into next week’s fixture away at Matson II.
The man of the match award went to scrum half Carl Moore for a tireless display.
