Ben Large: Amateur Rugby Player of the Year

Ben Large has become the Crabbies National Rugby awards ‘Amateur Player of thr Year’.
In the event held at Twickenham, Ben scooped the top prize and comes home with the trophy and a framed presentation photo containing not only a testament to Ben’s talents, but a ringing endorsement of the team ethos at Drybrook and all we are trying to do on and off the pitch.
Following is the text from the photo presentation.
Congratulations Ben!

The framed accolade.

At the start of last season there was a buzz around Drybrook RFC.
Three seasons in South West 1 West under the guidance of Drybrook’s youngest ever captain, Ben Large, now 24, had seen continuous improvement from survival (11th of 14), through consolidation (6th of 14), to pushing for promotion (3rd of 14) and the club’s highest-ever league finish in its 125-year history.
The 2017-18 season ended in triumph when they beat fierce rivals Newent 34-10 to take the South West 1 West title after winning 24 of their 26 games.
Ben led by example throughout the season, inspiring his team-mates to their ultimate victory.
His commitment to the team was a key factor to their success.
At one point he had to book extra flights out of his own pocket to return from Las Vegas after a wrongly booked flight by a partyorganiser meant it looked like he would miss a crucial game.
There is a great team ethos at the Gloucestershire club, which was a key factor in this unprecedented success.
Twelve of the squad have progressed through the junior section after playing from the age of eight.
For a village with a population of about 3,000, the club is massively punching above its weight.
A lot of this is down to the closeness of the playing squad.
Ben regularly organises off-field socials, out-of-season training and challenges and he is the glue that holds this team together.
His performances on the pitch are consistently impressive. It Only takes a read through a few of the match reports on the clubs website to realise how important his ability and leadership is to this team.
