Drybrook were a shade unfortunate not to come away with at least a losing bonus point on their first ever trip to Camborne’s Recreation ground. They played extremely well throughout and it was only the Cornish men’s driving maul and superior scrummage that eventually decided the result.
Camborne made a blistering start and missed the opportunity to go in front when the ball was knocked on close to Drybrook’s line.
It took Drybrook 10 minutes to get out of their own half but when they did they enjoyed a good spell of pressure in the home 22 but eventually Camborne were able to clear.
Play went backwards and forwards for a period with neither side able to break through but on 23 minutes Drybrook broke the deadlock with the opening try.
After several phases of play the space suddenly opened up wide out and centre Simon Rugman scampered over in the corner.
Camborne hit straight back and forced a couple of 5 metre scrums which eventually led to a try from a pick up and drive by the home forwards.
The successful conversion put Camborne ahead but Drybrook rallied strongly and built up the pressure with a couple of penalty kicks to the corner which eventually led to a penalty that Tom Treherne kicked to regain the lead.
In the last minute of the first half Camborne regained the lead when they wave after wave of attacks was finally rewarded with a try following another forward drive.
Simon Rugman then had a chance to reduce the deficit with a long range penalty which drifted wide.
Half Time:
Camborne 14pts
Drybrook 5pts
Drybrook were forced to defend at the start of the second half as Camborne threw everything into attack and despite some gallant defence they were eventually outdone by another forward drive for a try.
The home side continued to press but Drybrook held out despite losing No 8 Mitch Bourne to the sin bin and after 20 minutes they finally got out of their own half.
Replacement back row man Mitch Renton began to punch holes in the home defence and as Drybrook began to see more of the ball, it was Camborne’s time to defend.
On 28 minutes Drybrook’s enterprise was finally rewarded when Rugman went over for his second try under a pile of players near the home posts.
Five minutes later a smart counter attack by Camborne took play back into Drybrook’s half but Rugman anticipated an inside pass and intercepted before setting off on a blistering run down the touchline. He managed to fend off 3 tacklers as the cover defence came across and was finally tackled inches short of the line. His momentum looked to have taken him over for a try but the referee saw it differently and deemed a double movement had taken place and Camborne were able to clear from the resulting penalty.
Drybrook then lost prop Elliot White to the bin after the referee lost patience following a string of penalties but Camborne were not able to make the advantage count.
With time running out Drybrook tried hard to get back in it but could not break through and then in the last minute Bourne pulled off a tremendous cover tackle to deny the home team a bonus point try.
This was a very good performance from Drybrook despite the defeat with Simon Rugman getting the man of the match accolade.
