Drybrook started well, setting up camp in Lydney territory for the first twenty minutes although at first they couldn’t penetrate their host’s stalwart defence. But eventually a well-executed backs move saw Tom Sime slice through to touch down under the posts: the Drybrook wing then converted his own try.
A minute later scrum half Rhys Chandler jinked past his opposite number to score Drybrook’s second, also converted by Tom. Apart from a couple of forays into the opposition 22 the Lydney boys were kept locked in their own half by the impressive tackling of a Drybrook team out to avenge a defeat earlier in the season. Tyler Jerrum lead the tackle count, with Blaine Harris and Joe Lewis also making their presence felt.
Continued pressure saw Lydney pushed back to the 5-metre line where they were awarded a scrum. When the ball came out it wasn’t collected cleanly and rolled over the try line: quick-thinking Rhys Chandler dived over to ground it for his brace, giving the visitors a 19-0 lead at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half: Lydney were soon pressurised into conceding a penalty, which Rhys Chandler slotted over to increase the lead. Drybrook’s new signings Sam Stone and Alex Villis-Powell impressed from the outset, while the strength of their bench saw the visitors keep up the intensity for the full match.
There was good flowing rugby played by both sides, but the Drybrook tackling was outstanding: Keir Palmer-Smith and Jason Jones made spectacular hits but everyone contributed. Lydney did make it deep into opposition territory but an excellent clearance kick by the Drybrook full back returned play back to their 22.
Another good kick, this time of the long cross-field variety by the scrum half, saw Tom Sime gather and race over to cap an excellent display by bagging his brace.
The Drybrook forwards had played their hearts out and fully deserved the next try: a powerful rolling maul that Lydney just couldn’t stop ended up with Jordan Taylor grounding the ball just over the try line.
The match had been played at high tempo throughout and legs were tiring when full back Alex Iles sped through a gap on the half way line, outstripped the home defence and scored between the posts. This gave Rhys Chandler an easy conversion to increase his personal tally to 15 points and wrap up a convincing win against their fellow Foresters.
