Drybrook Ladies VS Guernsey Ladies – September 9th 2017

Drybrook Ladies 62pts
Guernsey Ladies 5pts

After what seemed to be a very long pre-season Drybrook ladies faced Guernsey in their first Championship 2 league game of the season, KO off was planned for 3pm but due to airport delays Guernsey arrived late forcing the KO off back to 4pm.
After the long delay Drybrook received the KO playing towards the club house and within just 10 minutes Kirsty Gwilliam who was playing her first senior league game crashed through the Guernsey defence to score close to the sticks with skipper Ellie Underwood adding the well-deserved extras.
Just 2 minutes later Ellie created her own try by breaking through the Guernsey back line to score from 40 meters out. This was shortly followed by a second this time adding the conversion giving Drybrook a strong lead with just 20 minutes played 19-0.
Drybrook showed off their structure by playing phases left and right, strong carries from forwards Julie Ann Norbury, Stevie Liddiatt and Dorrie Morley.
25 minutes in Drybrooks vice-captain and hooker Stevie Liddiatt was the first of the forwards to get their name on the score sheet by carrying hard through the defence and Ellie added the extras.

Drybrooks scrummaging was too much for the Guernsey pack causing them to give away a penalty which Drybrook capitalised on immediately with quick hands seeing Ellie scoring her third try of the game.
With 10 minutes left of the first half the score was 31 – 0 to the home side and Guernsey’s heads were starting to drop.
Great jackal from Lucie Smith created clean turn over ball, Drybrook played from left to right using the whole width before scrum half Sarah Bevan got tackled into touch as she grounded the ball over the line.
Drybrook contested the lineout and won the ball before starting a driving maul. Julie Ann Norbury peeled off and dived over to score her first try, just before she had to leave at half time for work.
Drybrook went into the break 38-0.
Drybrook kicked off the second half with two new props Natasha Kibble and Lorna Griffiths and applied pressure on Guernsey immediately.
After camping in the their 22 for 5 minutes they were rewarded with Dorrie scoring her first try of the season, Ellie converting to increase the Drybrook lead further again.
In the 58th minute and Ellie received a great ball from the half way cutting a hard line handing off two players on her way to score and narrowly avoided a slide tackle from a frustrated Guernsey defender.

With the successful kick the score was 52 -0 and  it was clear to all that the game was won.
Drybrook became complacent allowing Guernsey in for a consolation try out wide.
Drybrook upped their game once again from the restart and Chanise Beard scored the next Drybrook try receiving the ball 8 meters out, adopting a perfect body angle to destroy Guernsey’s back line.
Captain Ellie Underwood finished the game by scoring her 5th and final try of the game to close the game out at 62 – 5.

Players of the match went to Kirsty Gwilliam and Dorrie Morley for their hard running with special mentions to Sarah Bevan who played a strong game at scrum half and Micha Harris who worked relentlessly in both attack and defence.
