Chosen Hill U16s v Drybrook U16s – Sunday 28th October 2012

The match started slowly, with eight penalties against Drybrook in as many minutes. Neither side could get going though as the referee blew up at every opportunity and didn’t play advantage. It was a relief that the first half only lasted 19 minutes, leaving it scoreless at the break.

The second half was much better with Drybrook pressurising from the re-start. But when a Drybrook penalty kick went wide Chosen got back into the match, eventually scoring an unconverted try.

The Foresters stepped up a gear at this point. Alex, Adam, Jordan, Blaine, Rhys and George made repeated breaks while Ash was excellent in the lineout, stealing several Chosen throws.

From deep in their own territory Drybrook eventually launched a superb attack: Alex, Adam and Luke R combined perfectly until Alex slid over for the best team score of the season.

Ben capped another powerful display by crashing over in fine style, only to have his perfectly good try disallowed by the referee although the linesman saw the grounding perfectly. Jack and Joe also had good games and everyone tackled heroically when Chosen were camped on the Drybrook try-line for several minutes.

The only downside was the regularity with which Drybrook players argued with the referee, losing 10m of hard-won territory every time. Referees will always penalise backchat, even when they realise that they were wrong. But they will never change their minds during a match, so don’t even bother…

Drybrook squad: Rich Bowkett, Rhys Chandler, George Cinderey, Blaine Harris, Ben Howells, Alex Iles (captain), Luke Johnson, Jack Morgan, Joe Lewis, Kier Palmer-Smith, Huw Rimmer, Adam Rees, Luke Roberts, Tom Sime, Jordan Taylor and Ashley Wallace.
