Drybrook were a shade unfortunate not to come away with at least a losing bonus point on their first ever trip to Camborne’s Recreation ground. They played extremely well throughout and it was only the Cornish men’s driving maul and superior scrummage that eventually decided the result.
Camborne made a blistering start and missed the opportunity to go in front when the ball was knocked on close to Drybrook’s line.
It took Drybrook 10 minutes to get out of their own half but when they did they enjoyed a good spell of pressure in the home 22 but eventually Camborne were able to clear.
Play went backwards and forwards for a period with neither side able to break through but on 23 minutes Drybrook broke the deadlock with the opening try.
After several phases of play the space suddenly opened up wide out and centre Simon Rugman scampered over in the corner.
Camborne hit straight back and forced a couple of 5 metre scrums which eventually led to a try from a pick up and drive by the home forwards.
The successful conversion put Camborne ahead but Drybrook rallied strongly and built up the pressure with a couple of penalty kicks to the corner which eventually led to a penalty that Tom Treherne kicked to regain the lead.
In the last minute of the first half Camborne regained the lead when they wave after wave of attacks was finally rewarded with a try following another forward drive.
Simon Rugman then had a chance to reduce the deficit with a long range penalty which drifted wide.

Half Time:
Camborne 14pts
Drybrook 5pts

Drybrook were forced to defend at the start of the second half as Camborne threw everything into attack and despite some gallant defence they were eventually outdone by another forward drive for a try.
The home side continued to press but Drybrook held out despite losing No 8 Mitch Bourne to the sin bin and after 20 minutes they finally got out of their own half.
Replacement back row man Mitch Renton began to punch holes in the home defence and as Drybrook began to see more of the ball, it was Camborne’s time to defend.
On 28 minutes Drybrook’s enterprise was finally rewarded when Rugman went over for his second try under a pile of players near the home posts.
Five minutes later a smart counter attack by Camborne took play back into Drybrook’s half but Rugman anticipated an inside pass and intercepted before setting off on a blistering run down the touchline. He managed to fend off 3 tacklers as the cover defence came across and was finally tackled inches short of the line. His momentum looked to have taken him over for a try but the referee saw it differently and deemed a double movement had taken place and Camborne were able to clear from the resulting penalty.
Drybrook then lost prop Elliot White to the bin after the referee lost patience following a string of penalties but Camborne were not able to make the advantage count.
With time running out Drybrook tried hard to get back in it but could not break through and then in the last minute Bourne pulled off a tremendous cover tackle to deny the home team a bonus point try.
This was a very good performance from Drybrook despite the defeat with Simon Rugman getting the man of the match accolade.

Drybrook faced an early battle after Dings caught them cold by scoring straight from the kick off. Drybrook showed a lot of character and pegged Dings back for much of the 1st half but were undone through some quick hands from the visitors who scored 2 further tries.
Drybrook hit back when a brilliant run from centre Matt Freeman produced an unconverted try. Andy Milner cut the defecit further with a successful penalty just before the break.

Half Time:
Drybrook United 8pts
Dings Knights 19pts

Drybrook came out strongly in the 2nd half but were unable to turn possession into points. Dings were reduced to 14 men after a dangerous high tackle on Luke Roberts but despite the one man advantage Drybrook still couldn’t break through.
Drybrook played well as a team but fitness began to take its toll and in the last 15 minutes Dings took control to run in some more tries.
The final score line did not reflect the match as Drybrook were competitive for most of the game and took a lot of positives from it.
Man of the match performances were from Matt Freeman at centre who hit some good running lines and Mitch Hale who put a good shift in with some hard running, big tackles and aggressive rucking.

Longlevens 2nds 59pts
Drybrook Extras 7pts

Drybrook Extras went down heavily against a Longevens outfit who are enjoying something of a revival after several seasons in the doldrums. The pace and handling ability of the Longlevens’ backs was evident from the off. Drybrook’s cause was further hampered when centre Jack Davis and back row man Lee Jones left the field injured in the first half.
Dan large filled in at centre and Drybrook’s “Uncle Fester” Chris Tingle came into the back row.
The young Longlevens side did not like the physicality that the older more experienced players from Drybrook had to offer but despite being on top at the breakdowns, the pace and support play of the home side proved too much at times.
Telling breaks from Dan Large, Chris Tingle and Simon Ballinger certainly punched holes in home defence and it was a credit to the team that they stuck at it.
The final score line did not make pleasant reading for Drybrook but at least they created a score of their own mid-way into the second half. It came from man of the match Chris Tingle who broke through several tackles following a short range tap penalty and Jimmy Ryder converted.
It was always going to be a tall order to compete in this fixture against such a young well drilled side, but the Drybrook players stuck to it and were extremely well served by the veterans who more than helped out.

Drybrook Extras; Jason Roberts, Quentin Partridge, Jack Davis, Ryan Dubberley, Jack Freeman, Jimmy Ryder, James Colwell, Steve Virgo (Capt), Billy Head, Alex Balman, Steve Turley, Lee Phelps, Lee Jones, Dan Large, Simon Ballinger.
Replacements; Andrew Warren, Clive Boughton, Chris Tingle, Chris Treherne, Neil Rickets, Craig lancett
