Drybrook’s proud unbeaten home record finally fell with this defeat by Somerset visitors Wells. By a strange quirk of fate it was Wells who were also the last visiting team to win at the Mannings, way back in February 2012, a run of 34 matches.
This time Wells were well worth their victory as they outplayed Drybrook for long periods and with the home side not on their best form, the outcome was seldom in doubt.
Wells started strongly and created an overlap in the 2nd minute but Drybrook just managed to keep them out. Further pressure followed and following a failed penalty attempt in the 4th minute the visitors took the lead with a second kick after Drybrook were penalised for not rolling away.
It took Drybrook 18 minutes before they made any inroads into Wells territory and outside half Alun Richards was unlucky to see his penalty kick rebound off the upright.
It was quick and slick from both teams but Wells began to shade it in terms of territory and possession and Drybrook were forced to defend for a long period.
Drybrook’s best attack of the half came to nothing when winger Mitch Baldwin just failed to hang on to the ball after some good support play involving several players.
Wells continued to ask a lot of questions of the Drybrook defence but both teams looked a little relieved to hear the half time whistle.

Wells 3pts

Five minutes into the second half Wells finally scored a try when quick recycling of the ball led to a break down the blind side and a score in the corner.
Two minutes later Drybrook found themselves defending their own line again and disaster struck when a charged down clearance kick led to a second try.
Drybrook responded very positively and relentless attacking almost brought a try for second row Marcus Cowles under the posts. Continued pressure followed and it came as no surprise when a gap finally opened and fullback Kristian Taft ran in under the sticks.
Richards converted to get Drybrook right back in it but from the restart Wells scored again, this time with a penalty kick following a high tackle.
Richards had the chance himself to pull back 3 points a few minutes later but pulled his effort wide and then a delightful break from Taft almost led to a second try for Drybrook.
Richards’s next penalty attempt went agonisingly close but Wells held on and began to frustrate Drybrook with some excellent defensive work, never allowing the home side any space or time on the ball.
With 10 minutes remaining the Drybrook backs attempted to move the ball wide but replacement winger Gareth Holdsworth failed to hang onto the pass and the ball went straight into the hands of his opposite number who raced clear from half way for the deciding score.
Drybrook tried to hit back but did not look capable of closing the gap against such a well organised and competent visiting team.
The Watts Contract Services players of the match for Drybrook were Danny Price and Luke Fisher.

Lydney 15pts
Drybrook 16pts

Drybrook United just edged this derby at Regentsholme where a late penalty could have given victory to the home team.
Drybrook got off to the perfect start when skipper Andy Milner knocked over a penalty inside 2 minutes.
Lydney came straight back at Drybrook with ex Drybrook player Toby McCormick scoring a try from picking up from the back of the scrum and coasting over.
Drybrook were next to score on 30 minutes when Lydney failed to retain possession at a lineout. Will Greenway charged down the field before offloading to Mitch Hale who in turn offloaded to Jay Knight to score in the corner.
Once again Lydney came back at Drybrook, this time with a try that came from a quick tap penalty.
Right on the stroke of half time Drybrook were awarded a penalty which skipper Andy Milner converted to give them an 11pts -10pts advantage at the break.
The 2nd half kicked off with Lydney enjoying the lions share off possession, but a malfunctioning home lineout ensured Drybrook were able to stay in the hunt.
Lydney managed to get on the scoreboard with a try after some good off loading and support play but Drybrook hit back with a try through old war horse Neil Morgan. After picking up from the base of the scrum he handed off several would be tacklers to score in the corner.
Drybrook’s scrum was an asset with Mitch Hale, Anthony Suter & Connor Auker-Howlett playing well, with Mitch Hale shading the man of the match award. It was also good to see the return of winger Nick Lewis after a few seasons away from the game.

Drybrook United XV; Luke Roberts, Jack Freeman, Tony Hussey, Matt Freeman, Jay Knight Andy Milner (Capt), Kieran Auker-Howlett, Mitch Hale, Connor-Hawker-Howlett, Tony Suter, Joe James, Greg Collins, Dean Large, Will Greenway,Neil Morgan.

Drybrook Extras 16pts

A good show for the first league game of the season with various debut players included in the side.
Drybrook started strongly in the first half winning various penalties at the breakdown and trying to run the ball at every opportunity. A close range try from skipper Steven Virgo with Jimmy Ryder adding the conversion along with a penalty meant Drybrook finished the half 10pts -6pts up.
The second half started well with replacement Chris Skelton looking strong with the ball in hand and Adam Gardiner making tackle after tackle.
25 minutes into the second half Drybrook lead 16pts -13pts through 2 further Jimmy Ryder penalties. Unfortunately fitness and the offloading skills of the opposition proved too much in the last ten minutes of the game.
Man of the match on his debut went to back row man Adam Gardiner.

Drybrook Extras; Ryan Dubberley, Kane Hale, Jack Davies, Jamie Roberts, James Meek, Jimmy Ryder, Danny Verry, Steve Virgo (capt), Tom Maskell, Scott Phelps, Lee Phelps, Steve Turley, Clive Boughton, Adam Gardiner, Richard Roberts.
